ESSAY ON CORRUPTION
By Satya Narayanan
We think of corruption only in terms of politicians making money for road projects etc. Just the money transaction is given the name of corruption. But what will call low-productivity employee in a public sector undertaking or an ineffective policeman at the red light. He might not be taking money, but might not be doing his work. The definition of corruption must include what are the values that are delivered for the jobs that are given. Then we will uncover that we have lot more problems to address than corruption in the form of money exchange for doing a job. That is no doubt an important part but that is one of the manifestations of an inefficient, nontransparent system. If the system is transparent enough to catch the performers of service providers to the customers then corruption will automatically get weeded out along with the inefficiencies. Also, one must remember that corruption has two people in the transaction. The giver is more responsible than the taker. It’s the giver who has to address this issue first. This is where citizen action helps, by saying a firm ‘no’ to those asking for bribes.
